Welcome to our Peugeot boutique, the inventor of the modern pepper mill, whose family French house dates back to 1810 in the Montbéliard region. Long before the automobile adventure, brothers Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frédéric Peugeot transformed an inherited mill into a steel foundry and launched a hardware business: clockmaking springs, saw blades, then coffee mills. In 1874, the first Peugeot pepper mill (model Z) introduced a revolutionary tempered-tooth mechanism that does not crush but cuts the pepper grain. Nearly 150 years later, this mechanism remains the recognised reference and is now designed for life by Peugeot Saveurs.

Peugeot Saveurs today designs and manufactures its mechanisms in France, mainly at Quingey (Doubs). The brand has developed several patented processes around the mill and offers a range covering pepper, salt, nutmeg, chillies and even coffee and special spices.

What is the difference between Peugeot pepper and salt mechanisms?

Peugeot mechanisms are differentiated by spice. The pepper mechanism is in tempered carbon steel with sharp teeth: it cuts the grain to release its full aroma. The salt mechanism uses a stainless steel treated to resist corrosion from damp salt. Using a pepper mill for salt — or vice versa — will quickly damage the mechanism. Peugeot consistently marks "pepper" (black mechanism or P logo) or "salt" (white mechanism or S logo) on its mills.

What is the Peugeot U'Select® system?

U'Select® is the system patented in 2004 by Peugeot that allows grind fineness to be adjusted via a simple ring at the base of the mill, with 6 pre-set positions (from very fine grind for seasoning to coarse for grilling). Unlike the traditional adjustment screw, the setting is precise and reproducible. U'Select® equips the premium Paris u'Select, Madras u'Select and several other collections.

Which Paris mill height should I choose for the table or the kitchen?

The Paris mill comes in several heights, with the 18 cm and 22 cm references being the most widely sold. The 18 cm stays discreet on an everyday table and suits a couple or small family. The 22 cm offers a larger reserve and a more comfortable grinding motion, well suited to the kitchen or larger gatherings. Taller heights (27 cm, 30 cm) are designed for open kitchens or dining rooms. For freshly ground pepper adapted to each dish, the Paris u'Select version allows you to vary the grind fineness from one preparation to another.

Which Peugeot mill should I choose for each use?

For everyday table use, the Paris and Paris Classic in beech (18 or 22 cm) have remained the benchmark for decades. For chefs and demanding cooks, models with the U'Select® system offer controlled grind fineness depending on the preparation. For a compact kitchen table or travel, the Bistro and Oleron models offer smaller formats.
