Royal Leerdam

Brand distributed by AZ boutique ★★★★★ ★★★★★ 4,7/5

Welcome to our Royal Leerdam boutique, a Dutch glassworks whose glassmaking tradition dates back to 1765 in the town of Leerdam, near Rotterdam. The tableware glass department was created in 1878 and, under the leadership of P.M. Cochius (1912-1930), pioneered the dialogue between glassmaking craft and avant-garde design. Royal Leerdam was awarded first prize at the 1925 Paris Exhibition and the Milan Gold Medal in 1951. The house joined the American Libbey group in 2002, then returned to Dutch ownership in 2022 with Anders Invest.

Royal Leerdam's expertise

Royal Leerdam combines two heritages: the Dutch tradition of pressed and blown glass, and a culture of functional design that has shaped European tableware history. The house today produces glass for the table, bar and hospitality trade.

  • Blown and pressed table glasses: water, wine, beer, spirits
  • Cut crystal: tumblers and decanters with engraved or chiselled designs
  • Bar glassware: cocktail and tasting glasses
  • Robust professional glassware for hospitality and catering

Choosing your Royal Leerdam glassware

What makes Royal Leerdam glassware stand out on the market?

Royal Leerdam built its reputation on consistent glass quality and a functional design recognised by several international awards. The house was notably a pioneer in bringing external designers (architects, artists) into glass design — an approach that is widespread today but was initiated by Leerdam between the two world wars.

What is the difference between pressed and blown Royal Leerdam glass?

Royal Leerdam pressed glasses are moulded and offer strong durability for intensive use (ideal in hospitality). Blown glasses are thinner, with a more delicate wall and a lighter feel; they are preferred for table and tasting collections. The marking and visual finish also differ: fewer mould lines and more transparency on blown pieces.

Is Royal Leerdam better for hospitality use or for a home table?

The Royal Leerdam offer covers both registers: robust pressed glasses, with functionality inherited from the Dutch tradition, suit hospitality and catering use where durability comes first; thinner blown glasses fit a more carefully dressed home table. For a café or brasserie, prefer the stable pressed tumblers. For a refined family table, blown stemware adds welcome finesse to wine service without going as far as a dedicated oenology glass.

Which Royal Leerdam glass for which use?

For everyday tables, robust pressed tumblers are a reliable choice. For serving wine, blown glasses with thin walls bring out aromas better. For bar and cocktails, the "tumbler" and "old fashioned" models in the Royal Leerdam catalogue offer a strength/elegance balance valued in hospitality.
