Wine tasting : an art

Tasting  a good wine from a grand cru after a hard week of work is always a real threat? Indeed, if you are a connoisseur, you will certainly be interested in our collection of wine glasses for tasting great wines! Besides, here are some steps to follow if you want to enjoy a good wine in good and due form!

As per the rules of oenology it is advisable to evaluate your great wines (after allowing them to decant in a carafe or decanter) in several aspects including the visual, the olfactory, and the taste. To begin, you need to place your tasting glass on a white surface, under a light source to determine its clarity, acidity and whether it is a young vintage or an old vintage wine.

Choose the right tasting glass according to your type of wine

Determine the right glass for the different types of wine: white wine glasses or red wine glasses.

  • Are you rather full-bodied red wine and tannic? We recommend Burgundy wines which are generally excellent wines Côtes du Rhône Villages vineyards with different appellations according to the specific region : the Chateauneuf du Pâpe, the Beaumes de Venise , Vacqueyras or Gigondas.
  • Are you fond of fresh white wine?  You will certainly be delighted by a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay de Bourgogne, a Viognier from southern France (Rhône Valley), an Alsace wine such as Riesling or Gewurztraminer from the Alpine massifs.

Some oenology basics

For the second step, it is essential to identify the aromas present in your wine tasting glass before you swirl and after swirling your wine glass. Thus, the action of inhaling and shaking the glass will allow the aromas to be released and the wine to aerate in contact with the air. This is called oxygenation which will allow you to recognize the "nose of wine". This can be divided in three categories: primary aromas (depending on the grapes used), secondary aromas (depends on wine making practice) and tertiary aromas (depends on whether it is a young or old vintage).

For a professional oenologist or sommelier, the identification of these aromas represents as much information on the grape varieties that make up the wine. The wine cellars are really full of mysteries!

Next comes the tasting moment, where you will suck air by opening the lips and exhale through the nose to circulate the aromas. You will be able to analyze the wine, its flavors in particular its acidity, its bitterness or its sweetness. A wine tasting party can be summed up as such: look – swirl – smell – taste.

Clear glass or crystal are common characteristics of the wine tasting glass to grasp each visual delicate nuance of your wine! Indeed, this type of glass is a stemmed glass with a capacity ranging between 32cl and 40cl with a bowl which is large enough so that the wine does not spill over the rim when you swirl the glass. Note that sparkling wines should be tasted using champagne flutes to hold the bubbles.
