Your stemmed glasses always manage to add a touch of refinement and sophisticated accent to your tabletop! Forming part of this glassware range, the water goblet echoes elegance and modern lifestyle/home trends. These drinkware containers, which are an alternative to the tumblers, have an integral part in the formal setting up of your table, on the table of gourmet restaurants, on your most elegant party tables such as the Christmas table or wedding table or for toasting during a tête à tête. Since the water glass is placed alongside the wine glasses, it is better to use a stemmed glass for the general harmony of the table. The old-fashioned glass or highball glass may hence not be appropriate. This glassware accessory differs from other glasses in its capacity, shape and position when placing dinner cutlery.

The water goblet: an epic history!

Did you know that originally aesthetic motivations had little to do with the stemmed glasses replacing the traditional cups and mugs! Indeed, its invention coinciding with the popularization of blown glass had much less glorious motivations! Its purpose was to stop the chilling wave of nobles murders during the 17th century. In order to prevent any conspiracy against the crown, it was decided to use the famous stem glasses which were intended to dissuade the servants from pouring poison into them. Since the servants had to hold the glass by the foot while revealing the stem and the bowl before serving.

In theory, no one could slip a harmful substance into drinks, since the hand could never approach or come into contact with the edge of the glass of wine or water. If nowadays (fortunately) the poisoning attempts are not so common anymore, glasses with stems are as popular as before and it is often preferred to the traditional glass but for aesthetic reasons! Whether it is to taste water, red wines, white wines, juices or even champagne, stemware is synonymous with prestige as it is reminiscent of yester! In addition, any oenologist or wine connoisseur will confirm that the ideal form of a glass of red wine, a white wine glass or a champagne flute is a stemmed glass!

But this also applies if you want to drink fresh water, the water goblet is the perfect container since its foot prevents your palm from warming your beverage. This is why you always have to hold the container by its stem unless you want to warm up your drink! Unlike the wine glass which must imperatively be transparent to appreciate the different red wine shades, for the water goblet no rule is imposed so you can opt for a white glass, black glass and you can even opt for colored glasses to match your other colored tableware items.

How to place your water goblet on your table?

According to the rules of table setting for formal dining the water glass must be placed in front of the plate and must have a greater capacity than the wine glass. The white and red wine glasses are on his right. Do not forget the water carafe or pitcher.
